SUCCESSFUL HYDRAULICS SEMINAR TARGETS SCOTLAND

Terex EquipmentShell U.K. Oil Products Limited (Shell) held another successful one-day seminar with the National Fluid Power Centre (NFPC) in Scotland in April with engineers and hydraulics specialists coming together at the event held at the Terex Centre of Excellence in Motherwell.

The seminar focused on keeping hydraulic systems healthy to minimise energy use and maximise performance, and was followed by an open debate by the attendees which included representatives of some of the UK

New cost-effective hand-held thermal imaging camera launched.

The Testo 880 CameraThe Testo 880 range from Alpine Components can be used  in a wide range of applications such as building surveys, identifying leakages in underfloor heating, mechanical and electrical inspections. Uniquely the Testo 880 measures surface humidity with real-time humidity measurement, for identification and display of mould risk areas.

Precise images can be obtained of buildings or of small objects from as close as 10cms. The 880-3 has an integrated digital camera with power LED's to illuminate dark areas. The digital image is displayed inside the thermal image for easy identification.

The 880 has a trigger key for fast freezing and recording of images, a five-way joystick for fast menu navigation and a 3.5 inch crystal clear screen. Two measurement points can be displayed on the screen for exact calculation of temperature differences.

BEKO Launch Air-Line Xtra piping System

BEKO Airline Xtra Piping SysemCompressed air, a major source of industrial energy, is being used increasingly in both the manufacturing and process industries where its distinct advantages of cleanliness, flexibility, safety and economy of use, compared with other energy sources, are fully exploited.

Modern process equipment, pneumatic controls and instrumentation, however, demand a supply of clean, uncontaminated air and this has necessitated the development in recent years of more advanced designs of compressors and ancillary equipment.

Maintenance of the cleanliness of this air, from source right up to the point of use is obviously essential. Hence air mains and branch lines are also required to be of an advanced design.

New Guide Outlines Facts, Risks and Measures to Prevent Dust Explosions

ImageA free, informative guide is now available, which outlines the facts, risks and steps required by Industrial companies to help prevent dust explosions in their plants. The guide is particu-larly useful to owners, engineers and senior managers, who are responsible for health and safety and who source electrical equipment for hazardous areas within the plant.

The eight-page guide, published by explosion protection electrical equipment specialist Cooper Crouse-Hinds, provides an introduction to the subject of dust explosions, including why and when they can occur; the latest European dust standards; safety measures; who is responsible for equipment safety; dust explosion facts and statistics; and ignition data on a wide variety of dust types, including food dusts, metals and chemicals.

Laser sensor filters out any interference from sub-micrometre surface defects.

An ideal application for the optoNCDT 2200-LL is therefore in structured surfaces, where the distance and not the structure itself need to be measured. The distance measurement should not be influenced by the structure of the surface, but instead should provide a constant, reliable value of the distance from the target.

Erich Winkler, Product Manager at Micro-Epsilon comments: “The speckle effect that is often associated with rough surfaces is filtered out by the new sensor’s optics and software algorithms. A component with a rough surface, when illuminated with light from a laser, exhibits a speckled appearance. This effect makes it very difficult for laser sensors to measure distances to surfaces, especially if the surface defects are very small.”

According to Winkler, the optoNCDT 2200-LL is already being used in a number of applications, including measuring the distance of lift cylinders on printing machines and for measuring the thickness of shiny, oily steel surfaces on textile machinery. The sensor is also being used to measure structured surfaces on grinding wheels and on CNC turned parts, including shafts and tubes. “These parts are cut from metal and are left with small machining tracks on the surface, which together, act like a small mirror to a laser light. In this case, most of the light is reflected back to the sensor at different angles rather than in a diffuse manner and so the sensor struggles to take accurate measurements. The optoNCDT 2200-LL has been designed specifically to solve measurement problems such as these,” explains Winkler.

Seven different versions of the optoNCDT 2200-LL sensor are available, with measuring ranges between 2mm and 200mm. The sensor is based on the company’s very successful optoNCDT 2200 and therefore benefits from all the other advantages of this series, such as fast measurement rates and automatic real-time exposure regulation.
